Irfan Pathan Predicts IPL 2026 Will Be MS Dhoni’s Final Season With CSK

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan anticipates the upcoming Indian Premier League 2026 campaign will mark the final appearance of MS Dhoni in a Chennai Super Kings (CSK) jersey. Speculation regarding the 44-year-old wicketkeeper-batter’s retirement has accelerated following CSK’s high-profile acquisition of Sanju Samson from the Rajasthan Royals.

The trade signals a strategic shift for the five-time champions, potentially allowing Dhoni to scale back his on-field responsibilities while serving as a mentor. Pathan, speaking on JioHotstar’s ‘Game Plan’, emphasized the difficulty of envisioning the franchise without its legendary captain.

“CSK is incomplete without MS Dhoni. This season might be the last time we see him in the yellow jersey,” Pathan stated. He noted that Dhoni recently joined the CSK training camp in Chennai, operating under the leadership of current captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, and appears physically prepared for the tournament.

Transitioning Leadership at Chennai Super Kings

CSK management is actively grooming the next generation of leaders. The addition of Samson adds an experienced voice to a core group that includes Gaikwad, Ayush Mhatre, Dewald Brevis, and Shivam Dube. Pathan expects Dhoni to facilitate this transition, focusing on team cohesion and strategic development from the dressing room.

Despite questions surrounding his batting position and workload management, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed that Dhoni will be available for the entire 2026 season and is expected to participate in all matches.

The blockbuster trade that sent Samson to Chennai also facilitated Ravindra Jadeja’s return to the Rajasthan Royals. Coupled with the departure of Jos Buttler, Rajasthan enters the 2026 season with a heavily restructured batting lineup. Former India coach Sanjay Bangar pointed out that Rajasthan’s younger players must now anchor the innings.

Riyan Parag takes over as full-time captain for Rajasthan, facing immediate pressure to deliver during the team’s opening three home games in Guwahati.

Meanwhile, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) face early structural challenges. Former opener Abhinav Mukund highlighted uncertainty regarding the availability of SRH captain Pat Cummins. The franchise has yet to release an official statement regarding the Australian fast bowler’s status for the opening matches.
