Irfan Pathan Excludes MS Dhoni From CSK Preferred XI Ahead of IPL 2026
Former Indian national team fast bowler Irfan Pathan has initiated a major debate ahead of the 2026 Indian Premier League season by entirely omitting MS Dhoni from his ideal playing XI for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Operating from his personal platform, Pathan argued that Dhoni’s current tactical deployment as a lower-order hitter facing minimal deliveries offers insufficient strategic value to the franchise.
Evaluating Dhoni’s Impact in the Lower Order
Pathan maintains that while Dhoni’s legacy in professional cricket is secured, his restricted time at the crease functions primarily as fan service rather than a match-winning tactic. In recent seasons, Dhoni has regularly entered the match during the final two overs to maximize his strike rate while managing a persistent knee issue.
“Him being out there for two overs is certainly pleasing for Dhoni’s fans, but CSK don’t benefit from it,” Pathan stated on his YouTube channel. “If Dhoni has to play, it has to be four overs, only then does it benefit the team. If he doesn’t play, then does he think ‘Let’s make a team where batters get the best chance?’ because it’s Dhoni’s team.”
Sarfaraz Khan Preferred at Number Six
To maximize run production, Pathan suggested utilizing an active, specialized batter like Sarfaraz Khan in the number six position. Pathan emphasized that a professional T20 franchise must prioritize players capable of anchoring innings or building substantial partnerships rather than relying exclusively on late-innings cameos.
Pathan’s Proposed CSK Lineup for IPL 2026
Pathan constructed a modernized roster blending established stars with uncapped domestic prospects like Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma. He also integrated high-profile acquisition Sanju Samson into the top order.
| Position/Role | Player Name |
|---|---|
| Top Order | Sanju Samson, Ayush Mhatre |
| Captain/Top Order | Ruturaj Gaikwad (C) |
| Middle Order | Shivam Dube, Dewald Brevis, Sarfaraz Khan |
| All-Rounders | Kartik Sharma, Prashant Veer |
| Bowlers | Akeal Hosein, Matt Henry, Noor Ahmad |
| Impact Player | Khaleel Ahmed |
Franchise Rebuild Following 2025 Struggles
The Chennai Super Kings are entering a transitional phase after finishing at the bottom of the table in the 2025 season. Management has clearly signaled a shift toward youth and aggressive batting by securing players like Samson in recent player auctions sanctioned by the BCCI.
While Pathan noted his predicted lineup could change if Dhoni commits to a larger batting role, current analysis indicates the five-time champions must overhaul their on-field strategy to return to playoff contention.
