Irfan Pathan Challenges Mayank Yadav to Justify LSG’s 11-Crore Faith

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has stated that the upcoming Indian Premier League season will be a defining period for fast bowler Mayank Yadav. Pathan urged the young pacer to justify the immense faith shown in him by the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) management after an injury-plagued start to his career.

Mayank emerged during IPL 2024, generating massive interest by consistently bowling over 150 kmph. However, abdominal injuries restricted him to just four matches, where he managed seven wickets. Despite his limited availability, LSG retained him for INR 11 crore ahead of the 2025 mega auction, signaling strong organizational backing. After recently returning to action and making his international debut for India, Mayank is working closely with the National Cricket Academy and bowling coaches to maintain strict fitness protocols.

Franchise Patience Requires On-Field Returns

Pathan noted that LSG’s willingness to wait for injured players is rare in the high-stakes environment of the Indian Premier League. The franchise expects this loyalty to translate into match-winning performances.

“Mayank Yadav has played very few matches over the last cycle; it is not enough. He is a retained player and has to be available this year,” Pathan stated on his YouTube channel. “The franchise has supported him. Mohsin Khan missed entire blocks of matches in previous seasons, but they have been backed. Very few franchises do this. I have seen Mumbai Indians and Kolkata Knight Riders do it, but many franchises run out of patience quickly.”

Revamped LSG Pace Attack Under Mohammed Shami

Looking at the broader squad composition, Pathan evaluated LSG’s bowling depth. The franchise aggressively targeted experienced Indian pacers in the auction, securing veteran Mohammed Shami to lead the attack alongside young talents like Prince Yadav, Naman Tiwari, and Arjun Tendulkar.

“Their fast bowling is quite strong; they have a lot of options,” Pathan explained. “Shami has played extensive domestic cricket, is in rhythm, and brings experience. Everyone knows that in seaming conditions, you get a reliable two overs from Shami upfront. The Lucknow pitch will offer him more assistance compared to flatter venues.”

Shami will guide a predominantly domestic pace unit. The team assembled an array of Indian fast bowlers to cover all phases of the innings.

Bowler Primary Role Acquisition Status
Mohammed Shami Powerplay & Death Overs Auction Purchase
Mayank Yadav Middle Overs Enforcer Retained
Mohsin Khan Left-Arm Variation Retained
Avesh Khan Hard Lengths Auction Purchase

The Search for a Franchise Identity

Beyond individual performances, Pathan analyzed LSG’s structural evolution. Entering their fourth season, the franchise is undergoing a complete transition after parting ways with several foundational figures:

  • KL Rahul: Released after serving as the inaugural captain for three consecutive seasons.
  • Marcus Stoinis: The Australian all-rounder departed after acting as a core middle-order finisher since the team’s inception.
  • Gautam Gambhir: Left his mentor role to join KKR and subsequently became the head coach of Team India.

“This is a team searching for its identity,” Pathan noted. “When you look at Mumbai Indians, you associate them with Sachin Tendulkar, Rohit Sharma, and Jasprit Bumrah. Chennai is synonymous with MS Dhoni, and RCB with Virat Kohli. Lucknow is a young team. It initially seemed Gautam Gambhir’s stamp would remain, but he has since moved on. This franchise possesses massive potential but needs to establish its core.”

After qualifying for the playoffs in their first two seasons (2022 and 2023), LSG regressed in 2024, finishing seventh in the standings. With a revamped roster, a new leadership group, and significant investments in raw pace, the upcoming season will test whether their aggressive auction strategy can return them to the top tier of global franchise cricket.
