Irfan Pathan Cautions Rajasthan Royals Over 13-Year-Old Prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Ahead of IPL 2025
Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has sounded a note of caution regarding the immense hype surrounding teenage cricket sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi ahead of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL). While backing the youngster to deliver, Pathan emphasized that professional franchises will exploit any technical weaknesses the 13-year-old possesses.
The Challenge of Top-Tier Bowling
Speaking to broadcasters, Pathan pointed out that the true test for Sooryavanshi begins now. Opposing teams rely on extensive data analytics to counter aggressive batters.
“There will be challenges for Vaibhav. Teams will come with specific plans against him,” Pathan noted. “We have already seen how teams plan for aggressive openers like Abhishek Sharma, and Vaibhav will face something similar. But I think he has the ability. He scores consistently wherever he plays, whether in U-19 or red-ball cricket.”
Correcting the Record: Sooryavanshi’s Actual Rise
Entering the IPL 2025 season, Sooryavanshi is the most discussed youth prospect in Indian cricket. At just 13 years old, he became the youngest player ever secured in an IPL auction when the Rajasthan Royals purchased him for INR 1.10 crore.
His legitimate claim to fame rests on a record-breaking performance in youth internationals. In October 2024, Sooryavanshi smashed a 58-ball century against Australia U-19 in a Youth Test in Chennai. This innings set the record for the fastest century by an Indian in Under-19 Test history.

Rahul Dravid’s Mentorship at Rajasthan Royals
Despite the growing spotlight, Pathan stressed the importance of mental balance as the teenager navigates the early phase of his professional journey.
“It is quite remarkable to think he is only 13 and could potentially have a 20-year professional career ahead of him,” Pathan added. “He needs to stay mentally free and not fall into the trap of thinking things are too easy. Rahul Dravid’s presence will be highly beneficial. Teams might look to keep the ball outside off stump, away from his hitting arc, and use variations to restrict him. He will have to adapt.”
With former India coach Rahul Dravid taking over as head coach and Sanju Samson leading the squad, the franchise offers a stable environment for youth development. The BCCI and franchise management will monitor his workload closely.
All eyes remain on Sooryavanshi to see if he can translate his domestic promise into sustained performance against international-caliber bowlers in his debut IPL campaign.
