Irfan Pathan Analyzes DC and PBKS Title Droughts Ahead of IPL 2025

Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings will initiate their campaign for a maiden Indian Premier League championship when the 2025 season commences. Both franchises remain without a title despite competing in the tournament since its 2008 inception. Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan recently evaluated their historical roster management and auction strategies, identifying specific front-office failures that prolonged their championship droughts.

Delhi Capitals: Missed Opportunities with Generational Talent

Speaking to the media, Pathan highlighted early operational errors by the Delhi Capitals (formerly Delhi Daredevils) during the early 2010s. He noted the franchise failed to identify and retain players who eventually became T20 legends.

“When I was in Delhi, Eric Simons was the coach, and there was an effort to bring stability,” Pathan stated. “But when you let go of players like AB de Villiers, and you have Andre Russell, starting from scratch is not easy. I played alongside Russell in the same dressing room, and there were a lot of discussions about giving him more opportunities, but they just couldn’t find a place for him consistently in the XI.”

According to ESPNcricinfo records, De Villiers played for Delhi from 2008 to 2010 before finding immense success with Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Russell played just seven matches for Delhi between 2012 and 2013 before evolving into a two-time MVP with Kolkata Knight Riders.

Punjab Kings: A Strategic Overhaul for 2025

Pathan contrasted Delhi’s historical missteps with the recent aggressive restructuring by the Punjab Kings. Ahead of the 2025 mega auction, Punjab overhauled its management by hiring Ricky Ponting as head coach. At the auction table, the franchise broke the bank to secure Shreyas Iyer for ₹26.75 crore, designating him as captain.

“Leadership has played a huge role in Punjab’s turnaround,” Pathan explained. “You win half the IPL at the auction table. Big purses don’t necessarily mean you will always get what you want, but they did.”

Strengthening Squad Depth

A primary criticism of past Punjab rosters was the over-reliance on a few star players, leaving the bench vulnerable to injuries. Pathan observed a clear shift in their current acquisition strategy, focusing heavily on international all-rounders to support the Indian batting core.

  • Marcus Stoinis: Adds middle-order power and medium-pace options.
  • Marco Jansen: Provides left-arm powerplay bowling and lower-order hitting.
  • Azmatullah Omarzai: Offers tactical flexibility as a seam-bowling all-rounder.
Player Role IPL 2025 Auction Price
Shreyas Iyer Captain / Batter ₹26.75 Crore
Marcus Stoinis All-rounder ₹11.00 Crore
Marco Jansen All-rounder ₹7.00 Crore

Pathan also addressed the franchise’s flexibility regarding player availability. Commenting on Australian wicketkeeper Josh Inglis, Pathan noted that while international commitments might impact his availability, Punjab’s decisive bidding reflects sound judgment. Information verified by the International Cricket Council confirms ongoing bilateral series often overlap with the IPL schedule, demanding robust bench strength.

As the 2025 season approaches, both franchises enter the tournament with restructured front offices and high-priced acquisitions, aiming to correct past errors and secure their first league championship.
