Harbhajan Singh Urges Mumbai Indians to Keep Rohit Sharma on the Field to Support Hardik Pandya
Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh has called on the Mumbai Indians (MI) management to ensure five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champion Rohit Sharma remains actively involved on the field during the upcoming season, rather than utilizing him merely as an Impact Player.
Speaking on JioStar, Harbhajan emphasized that Sharma’s on-field presence provides a significant advantage for current captain Hardik Pandya, particularly during high-pressure situations.
Strategic Value Beyond the Bat
The Impact Player rule, introduced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2023, permits teams to substitute one member of the playing XI during a match. While this allows teams to bring in specialized batters or bowlers, Harbhajan argues that reducing Sharma to a batting-only role wastes his extensive tactical knowledge.
“Rohit Sharma has been used as the 12th man who just bats, but I feel that the kind of leader he has been, a player like him should be on the field,” Harbhajan stated.
The veteran spinner highlighted the dynamic between the former and current captains. “In tough matches, when you need to take certain calls, when a captain sometimes needs a shoulder to lean on, Rohit Sharma can do that for Hardik Pandya,” he added.
Correcting the Record: Rohit Sharma’s IPL Statistics
Recent reports contained factual inaccuracies regarding Sharma’s recent season, falsely stating he crossed 7,000 career IPL runs and that MI finished fourth last season. In reality, the Mumbai Indians endured a difficult 2024 campaign, finishing at the bottom of the table in 10th place.
Despite the team’s struggles, Sharma delivered strong personal numbers at the top of the order, including an unbeaten century against the Chennai Super Kings. According to ESPNcricinfo, he currently holds 6,628 career IPL runs, ranking him among the top run-scorers in tournament history.
Rohit Sharma: 2024 IPL Season Statistics
| Matches | Runs | Highest Score | Average | Strike Rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 14 | 417 | 105* | 32.07 | 150.00 |
- Career Matches: 257
- Career Runs: 6,628
- Centuries: 2
- Championships as Captain: 5 (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020)
As the Mumbai Indians prepare for the new season, balancing the tactical flexibility of the Impact Player rule with the necessity of experienced leadership on the field remains a primary focus for the franchise.
