Jonny Bairstow Issues Plea for Family Safety Amid Dubai Travel Chaos
NEW DELHI – England wicket-keeper batter Jonny Bairstow has issued a public appeal for assistance after becoming stranded in Dubai with his family. The 35-year-old cricketer reported significant travel disruptions following the suspension of commercial flights from the United Arab Emirates, triggered by escalating military tensions in the region.
Bairstow, who was in Dubai for a family vacation, used social media to clarify his status and express frustration over the lack of communication from airlines. His situation coincides with a deteriorating security environment that has forced the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to alter the schedules of the England Lions and England Women’s squads.
Bairstow’s Urgent Message on X
Contrary to initial reports placing him with the England Lions development squad, Bairstow confirmed he is traveling independently. He expressed distress regarding the safety of his young family and the inability to secure a flight back to the United Kingdom.
“For those writing that I’m with the England Lions team… I am not. I am with my young family in Dubai,” Bairstow wrote on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). “Sure the England Lions security staff will be doing all they can to get them out of Abu Dhabi, but I am trying to keep my family safe and get us out of here!!”
Earlier, the Yorkshire cricketer directed a tweet at Emirates Airline and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer seeking immediate intervention.
- The Plea: “Can you get us home???” (Directed to PM Starmer)
- The Airline Issue: “We haven’t had any communication post-flight getting cancelled. Tried the lines of communication, but nothing.”
ECB Responds: Lions Fixture Canceled
The instability in the Middle East has directly impacted England’s cricketing operations in the UAE. The ECB announced the cancellation of the England Lions’ scheduled 50-over match against the Pakistan Shaheens in Abu Dhabi. Additionally, the departure of the England Women’s team for a planned training camp has been postponed pending further security assessments.
Impact on England Cricket Schedule
| Squad | Event/Location | Status |
|---|---|---|
| England Lions | vs. Pakistan Shaheens (Abu Dhabi) | Canceled |
| England Women | Training Camp (UAE) | Postponed |
| Jonny Bairstow | Private Family Travel (Dubai) | Stranded |
In an official statement, the ECB emphasized player safety: “The safety and security of our teams and staff is our top priority. We are in contact with security experts and the Government in relation to current events in the Middle East, and are following official advice.”
Government Travel Advisory Updated
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) updated its guidance for British nationals in the UAE over the weekend. The advisory currently urges citizens to shelter in place and avoid non-essential travel due to reported military activity in the region. This guidance complicates logistics for commercial carriers, leaving thousands of passengers seeking alternative routes.
While the England Men’s senior team is not currently in the region, officials are monitoring transit routes for future tours. Bairstow remains in Dubai awaiting a resolution to the flight ban.
