From Dahisar to Wankhede: Meet the Indian Throwdown Specialist Powering West Indies’ Practice
MUMBAI – The distance between a rented chawl in Dahisar and the iconic Wankhede Stadium is measured in more than just kilometers for Abhishek Jain. For the Mumbai-based side-arm throwdown specialist, that gap closed instantly with a single phone call from the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA).
Jain, known locally for his pace and accuracy using the side-arm thrower, was drafted to conduct high-intensity net sessions for the West Indies cricket team. His performance during the session not only tested the visiting power-hitters but also drew immediate praise from West Indies Head Coach Daren Sammy.
The Wankhede Session: Pace vs. Power
Upon arriving at Wankhede Stadium, Jain was tasked with simulating high-velocity deliveries for the Caribbean squad. Using a side-arm tool—a levered device allowing trainers to generate speeds upwards of 150kph (93mph) without the physical toll of traditional bowling—Jain made an immediate impact.
His first delivery to Sherfane Rutherford beat the batter for sheer pace. This prompted an immediate reaction from Coach Sammy.
“The very first delivery fired in like a rocket and beat Rutherford for pace,” Jain stated in an interview. “Sammy burst into laughter, visibly impressed. Walking up to me, he said, ‘Brilliant man! How can you bowl without a warm-up?’”
West Indies Players in the Session
Jain bowled to a roster of established international talent during the practice:
- Sherfane Rutherford: Struggled initially against Jain’s pace but adapted later.
- Shimron Hetmyer: Noted by Jain for hitting the most aggressive shots, despite being beaten multiple times.
- Shai Hope: West Indies ODI captain.
- Rovman Powell: T20 specialist and captain.
- Roston Chase: All-rounder.
- Shamar Joseph: Fast bowling sensation.
Technical Endurance and Accuracy
Modern cricket training relies heavily on throwdown specialists to manage player workloads while ensuring batters face consistent high-speed deliveries. Jain’s ability to maintain intensity sets him apart.
“In fifteen minutes, I can bowl 10 overs continuously,” Jain explained. “This has come with experience. Over time, I have learned how to increase my speed and bowl according to a batter’s requirement.”
Following the session, Sammy instructed the team management to roster Jain for all subsequent daily practice sessions, highlighting the value of local expertise in touring preparations.
The KL Rahul Connection
While the West Indies assignment brought international attention, Jain credits Indian wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul for significant personal and professional support. Jain regularly conducts throwdown sessions for Rahul when the cricketer is in Mumbai.
“KL Rahul sir is my favorite. He is a great human being and has helped me a lot,” Jain revealed. “My family went through a financial crisis, and during those difficult times, KL Rahul sir stood by me and supported us.”

Economic Reality of Local Specialists
Despite rubbing shoulders with cricket’s elite, Jain’s reality remains grounded. He currently resides in a chawl in Dahisar with his younger brother, a law student. Jain functions as the sole breadwinner, covering his brother’s educational expenses and sending funds to his parents in Madhya Pradesh.
