Former Pakistan Captain Sarfaraz Ahmed Announces Retirement From All Forms of Cricket
Former Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed has officially retired from all forms of professional cricket. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed the decision, marking the end of an international career highlighted by major tournament victories. The 37-year-old wicketkeeper-batter last played for Pakistan in a Test match against Australia at Perth Stadium in December 2023.
Following his retirement, Sarfaraz is expected to assume the role of head coach for the national Test team on a long-term basis. The red-ball coaching position has been vacant since the Pakistan Cricket Board chose not to retain interim head coach Azhar Mahmood last year. Sarfaraz recently accepted roles on the national selection committee and serves as the manager and mentor for both the Pakistan Under-19 and Shaheens development squads.
International Career and Captaincy
Sarfaraz departs as one of Pakistan’s most successful captains in major International Cricket Council (ICC) events. He led the national team to the 2006 U-19 World Cup title and the 2017 Champions Trophy championship, defeating the India national cricket team in the finals of both tournaments.
“I could never have dreamt of captaining Pakistan in all three formats and winning the ICC U-19 World Cup in 2006 and the 2017 Champions Trophy… they are unforgettable moments for me,” Sarfaraz said in his official statement.
Career Statistics
According to historical data from ESPNcricinfo, Sarfaraz captained Pakistan in exactly 100 international matches across all three formats. His career spanned 232 international appearances.
| Format | Matches Played | Matches as Captain |
|---|---|---|
| Test Matches | 54 | 13 |
| One-Day Internationals (ODI) | 117 | 50 |
| Twenty20 Internationals (T20I) | 61 | 37 |
Future Administrative Roles
While the Karachi-born cricketer remained active in domestic first-class cricket until late last year, his recent administrative appointments indicate a permanent shift toward team management. By stepping away from his playing career, Sarfaraz clears the path for his anticipated appointment as the senior men’s Test coach.
