Former Chief Selector Sandeep Patil Breaks Silence: MS Dhoni Never Asked to Drop Yuvraj Singh

For years, Yograj Singh has publicly blamed former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni for his son, Yuvraj Singh, being dropped from the national team. Former India cricketer and chief selector Sandeep Patil has now officially addressed the issue, confirming that Dhoni played no role in the decision.

The Truth Behind the Selection Committee Decisions

Patil served as the chairman of selectors for the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) from 2012 to 2016. During his four-year tenure, the selection committee made several major transition decisions, phasing out senior players such as:

  • Yuvraj Singh
  • Gautam Gambhir
  • Sachin Tendulkar

Appearing on The Vicky Lalwani Show on YouTube, Patil dismissed the long-standing rumors regarding Dhoni’s alleged interference. He insisted the decision to move on from Yuvraj was taken entirely by the selection committee without pressure from the captain.

“Not once, not during selection meetings, not on tour, not during matches, did Mahendra Singh Dhoni say drop Yuvraj Singh. I am going on the record,” Patil stated.

When asked if Dhoni objected to the committee’s decision, Patil clarified that the former captain fully supported the selectors. “He had total confidence in the selection committee. He didn’t say anything,” Patil added.

Addressing Yograj Singh’s Criticism

Yograj Singh has frequently criticized Dhoni in the media, alleging that the wicketkeeper-batter deliberately sidelined his son to end his international career. Patil acknowledged the natural protective instincts of a parent but emphasized that directing anger at Dhoni is factually incorrect.

“A father feeling strongly about his son is not wrong. But the blame is being placed in the wrong place,” Patil explained.

MS Dhoni’s Career and Leadership Record

Dhoni retired as one of the most successful captains in the history of the International Cricket Council (ICC). His leadership brought India three major limited-overs trophies, and his career statistics highlight his sustained performance across all formats.

International Career Statistics

Format Matches Played Major ICC Trophies Won as Captain
Test 90 ICC Test Championship Mace (2009)
ODI 350 ICC World Cup 2011, ICC Champions Trophy 2013
T20I 98 ICC T20 World Cup 2007

Patil’s clarification puts to rest years of speculation, firmly placing the responsibility for team selection during that era on the committee rather than the captain.
