Defying the Power Game: Cooper Connolly’s Traditional Approach Pays Off in PBKS IPL Debut
CHANDIGARH — Australian all-rounder Cooper Connolly is making an immediate impact in his debut Indian Premier League (IPL) season for the Punjab Kings. In a tournament increasingly dominated by raw power, the 22-year-old is relying on timing and technical proficiency to score runs at a rapid pace.
Standing Firm Against the Power-Hitting Trend
Connolly demonstrated his strategic approach during the Punjab Kings’ opening match against the Gujarat Titans at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur. Arriving at the crease at No. 3 following a top-order collapse, he anchored the innings with an unbeaten 72 off 44 deliveries.
“I am pretty keen to stick to my strengths,” Connolly stated during a press conference in the JioStar Press Room. “Obviously power is becoming a big part of T20 cricket, but there are other ways to go around it. And that is going to be me, and I am confident I am going to get around that.”

Through his first four matches, Connolly has provided stability and an excellent scoring rate for the Punjab franchise. His ability to find gaps rather than constantly attempt to clear the boundary ropes has resulted in highly efficient run-scoring.

Adapting Across All Formats
Connolly’s rise through the International Cricket Council (ICC) ranks has been swift. He has already represented the national team across all three international formats. His recent Test debut against Sri Lanka in Galle provided valuable experience against high-quality spin bowling, which he is now applying on Indian pitches.
- Format versatility: Played T20Is, ODIs, and Tests for Australia by age 22.
- Spin strategy: Utilized his experience from the Galle Test to counter sub-continent spinners in the IPL.
- Role adaptability: Shifted seamlessly into a No. 3 anchor role after a top-order collapse against Gujarat.
“There is a beauty about playing all three formats,” Connolly explained. “It is a challenge, and it is going to take some time to understand how I am going to go between all three formats. I am still only 22.”
Tackling Sub-Continent Spin
The transition to Indian conditions requires distinct technical adjustments, specifically against spin bowling. Connolly views the IPL as an opportunity to refine his technique.
“The wickets have been relatively nice so far, so I think it is just about trying to put the pressure back on the spinners,” Connolly noted regarding his aggressive intent against slow bowling.
