Cooper Connolly’s Debut Fireworks Lead PBKS Past Gujarat Titans Despite Gill’s Late Bowling Gambles

Cooper Connolly Leads Punjab Kings Past Gujarat Titans Following Late Bowling Tactical Errors

Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill acknowledged a tactical misstep regarding his bowling changes after the Punjab Kings chased down a 163-run target to secure a three-wicket victory in their Indian Premier League opener on Tuesday. The delayed introduction of fast bowler Prasidh Krishna allowed Punjab to stabilize their innings before a late batting collapse briefly brought Gujarat back into the contest.

Connolly Anchors Punjab Kings Run Chase

Australian all-rounder Cooper Connolly anchored the Punjab Kings’ chase with a 72-run performance off 44 deliveries on his tournament debut. Connolly hit five fours and five sixes, navigating the middle overs alongside Prabhsimran Singh. The duo constructed a 76-run partnership for the second wicket after opening bowler Kagiso Rabada dismissed Priyansh Arya early, with debutant Ashok Sharma securing the catch at midwicket.

Prabhsimran contributed 37 runs from 24 balls before falling to leg-spinner Rashid Khan, caught at long-on. Despite regular wicket losses at the opposite end, Connolly maintained the required run rate, ensuring Punjab reached 163 with five balls to spare.

Team Top Performer Key Statistic
Punjab Kings Cooper Connolly 72 runs off 44 balls
Punjab Kings Vijaykumar Vyshak 3 wickets for 34 runs
Gujarat Titans Shubman Gill 39 runs off 27 balls
Gujarat Titans Prasidh Krishna 3 key middle-order wickets

Gill Explains Late Bowling Changes

Gill held back Krishna until the 13th over, at which point Punjab required 53 runs from 48 deliveries. The fast bowler made an immediate impact, dismissing Shreyas Iyer—who had just hit two sixes off Ashok Kumar—on his first delivery. Washington Sundar completed the catch at deep midwicket.

Krishna proceeded to remove Shashank Singh and Marcus Stoinis in rapid succession, while Sundar claimed the wicket of Nehal Wadhera. This sequence of dismissals heavily disrupted the Punjab middle order.

Following the match, Gill addressed the decision to delay his premier strike bowler.

“I could have got Prasidh on earlier, but we were in the game until the end, there will always be ifs and buts,” Gill stated. “But he came at the right time, took wickets and kept us in the game until the 17th and 18th over.”

Chahal and Vyshak Restrict Gujarat’s Batting

Earlier in the match, the Gujarat Titans posted a total of 162 for 6. Gill led the scoring with 39 off 27 balls, supported by Jos Buttler, who added 38 off 33 deliveries. However, the Titans struggled to accelerate during the final overs against a disciplined Punjab bowling attack.

The ESPNcricinfo match data highlights the effectiveness of the Punjab bowlers during the middle overs. Yuzvendra Chahal controlled the run rate, returning figures of 2 for 28 in his four overs. Fast bowler Vijaykumar Vyshak delivered the primary damage, claiming 3 for 34.

Gill pointed to his team’s failure to maximize the final five overs as a primary factor in the defeat.

“We bowled pretty well, we didn’t get going in the last five or six overs with the bat,” Gill noted. “It wasn’t a 200 wicket, but if we had 175 it would have been different. We kept losing wickets and we couldn’t get going in the last five overs.”

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) scheduling puts Gujarat Titans back on the field later this week, where they will look to correct their middle-overs batting and tactical bowling deployment.
