“Cannot Be the Impact Player”: Aakash Chopra Suggests Retirement for MS Dhoni Ahead of IPL 2025
Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has ignited discussions regarding MS Dhoni’s future with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ahead of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. Analyzing the five-time IPL champions’ recent mega auction strategy, Chopra stated that the 43-year-old veteran should not extend his career solely to exploit the Impact Player rule.
Dhoni, who recently acknowledged that his fitness is naturally declining, stepped down from the captaincy in 2024 to allow Ruturaj Gaikwad to take the helm. With recurring knee issues restricting his mobility, speculation continues to mount regarding his specific role and position in the batting order for the upcoming campaign.
The Impact Player Dilemma
Speaking on JioStar’s cricket broadcast, Chopra emphasized that Dhoni’s primary value lies in his tactical acumen and on-field leadership—attributes neutralized if he is confined to the dugout.
“You do not run the team from the dugout; it is not football. In cricket, you need to be on the field, and MS Dhoni’s biggest asset is his ability to read the game better than anybody else. That clarity and conviction are what make him who he is,” Chopra observed.
He further noted that relying on the substitute regulation would be a disservice to the wicketkeeper-batter’s legacy. “I feel this could be his last season. Conditions apply in terms of his fitness and his knee. But he cannot be the Impact Player. If he is playing as an Impact Player, I think it is time for him to hang up his boots.”
Transitioning the Roster: Gaikwad’s Squad
Historically known as ‘Daddy’s Army’ due to a preference for experienced veterans, the CSK management executed a clear pivot during the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) mega auction. The franchise invested heavily in youth, acquiring talents like Dewald Brevis, Ayush Mhatre, and wicketkeeper Urvil Patel to build a foundation for the next cycle.
Chopra highlighted this shift as evidence of Dhoni taking a permanent back seat in operations. “If you look at the auction and the way the team has been built, it is not the team MS Dhoni would have built if it were left entirely to him. This is Ruturaj Gaikwad’s team. Dhoni will observe things and offer advice, allowing the younger players to grow and prosper.”
