BCB Bans Ex-Selector Monjurul Islam Following Harassment Investigation

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has imposed an indefinite ban on former national cricketer and women’s team selector Monjurul Islam from all cricket-related activities. This decision follows an independent inquiry into allegations of misconduct and harassment lodged by former women’s team captain, Jahanara Alam.

The punitive measures stem from an investigation into incidents reported during the 2022 Women’s Cricket World Cup. The board’s decision marks a significant disciplinary stance within Bangladesh’s cricket administration.

Inquiry Committee Findings

The BCB formed an Independent Inquiry Committee to examine four specific allegations raised by Jahanara Alam against Monjurul Islam. The investigation yielded mixed but damning results regarding the former selector’s conduct.

  • Proven Misconduct: The panel found initial proof of inappropriate behavior in two of the four cases, classifying the actions under harassment and misconduct rules.
  • Unsubstantiated Claims: Two other allegations could not be proven due to a lack of sufficient evidence.
  • Outcome: Monjurul is banned from any direct or indirect employment or cricket-related activities under the BCB’s jurisdiction.

In an official statement, the BCB clarified the scope of the ban:

“Based on the findings of the Independent Inquiry Committee formed by the BCB to examine the complaint lodged by former Bangladesh Women’s National Team Captain Jahanara Alam, the Board has decided to impose a ban on former national cricketer Monjurul Islam from all forms of direct or indirect employment and/or cricket-related activities under the jurisdiction of the Bangladesh Cricket Board.”

Although Monjurul Islam’s contract with the board concluded in June 2025, the BCB emphasized that his behavior violated professional standards. The board is currently reviewing the committee’s full recommendations to determine if further legal or administrative steps are necessary.

Women’s BPL and Administrative Updates

During the same governance meeting, the BCB finalized the schedule for the inaugural Women’s Bangladesh Premier League (WBPL). The historic tournament is set to take place across two venues.

The BCB stated, “In view of his intention to step down at the end of his tenure as Chairman National Selection Panel, the Board has decided to offer a one-month extension to Gazi Ashraf Hossain. During this period, the Board will work on finding his successor and reorganisation of the panel.”
