Bangladesh Government Clears Path for IPL 2026 Broadcasts, Reversing Interim Ban
Bangladesh has officially changed its stance on broadcasting the Indian Premier League (IPL). The newly appointed Information and Broadcasting Minister, Zahir Uddin Swapan, confirmed that there are no longer any government restrictions preventing the telecast of the T20 tournament within the country.
Commercial Policy Replaces Political Directives
This development resolves the uncertainty that clouded IPL broadcasting rights following a ban instituted by the previous interim government led by Professor Muhammad Yunus. The former administration’s directive had prohibited local channels and cable operators from airing the competition, cutting off millions of fans from the franchise league.
Speaking to Deutsche Welle, Swapan outlined the new administration’s flexible, commerce-driven approach. While no broadcaster has formally applied for telecast rights for IPL 2026 yet, the ministry is prepared to approve such requests based on standard market practices.
“No one applied to us to telecast the IPL. We don’t want to mix politics with sport. We will look at it from a commercial perspective,” Swapan stated. He added that the government will not block international networks like Star Sports or local channels from broadcasting the matches.
Cable Operators Confirm Lifted Restrictions
The Cable Operators Association of Bangladesh (COAB) has endorsed the ministry’s clarified position. COAB Office Secretary Rezaul Karim Lablu verified that cable providers currently face no legal barriers regarding the broadcast of IPL matches.
“If Star Sports telecasts the IPL in Bangladesh, they can do it because no one has asked us to stop it,” Lablu noted. He confirmed that the prior directives from the interim government are no longer active, adding, “Those directives do not have any value now. If the current government asks us to stop it, we will do so, but as of now, there are no such instructions.”
Key Broadcast Policy Changes
- Removal of Political Bans: The current administration voided the interim government’s blackout on IPL programming.
- Open Market Approach: Both domestic networks and international broadcasters are permitted to air matches.
- Cable Operator Compliance: COAB has confirmed no standing orders limit the distribution of live IPL feeds to Bangladeshi households.
Bangladesh’s Historical Ties to the IPL
The return of IPL broadcasts holds distinct value for the local cricket market, given the country’s historical representation in the tournament organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Bangladeshi fans closely follow the league to track the performance of national team players.
