Bangladesh Cricket Board Plots Shakib Al Hasan’s Long-Term Return Ahead of 2027 ODI World Cup
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is actively considering the reinstatement of veteran all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, with newly appointed chief selector Habibul Bashar targeting the 2027 ODI World Cup as the ultimate objective.
Political Shifts and National Eligibility
Shakib, 37, relocated to the United States after the Awami League government, led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, was ousted during a student uprising in 2024. Initially barred from representing the national team by the interim administration, the restructured cricket board is now open to his return.
Habibul Bashar, who took over as chairman of selectors following the administrative overhaul, clarified that the board views Shakib’s integration as a structural asset rather than an emotional farewell tour.
Strategic Planning Over Short-Term Fixes
Addressing rumors regarding the upcoming home white-ball series against New Zealand beginning April 17, Bashar noted that immediate inclusion is unlikely due to a lack of match practice.
“There is not much time left before the New Zealand series, and I am not sure how much cricket Shakib has been involved with,” Bashar told Cricbuzz. “From what I know about him, he is not a guy who will come tomorrow and play the day after.”
Bashar emphasized the necessity of a sustained commitment from the former captain:
- Preparation standards: Shakib requires adequate training time to meet international fitness and form requirements.
- Sustained service: The board prefers a multi-year commitment extending to the 2027 World Cup rather than a single-series return.
- Structured roadmap: Integration back into the national setup will follow a defined timeline rather than impulsive selections.
“If we can get service from him, we will want that he provides that for a long time. In that regard, preparation is very important,” Bashar stated. “I want him for the longer term, at least to have that plan where he can play the 2027 World Cup. So my plans are not for one series.”
Shakib Al Hasan International Career Statistics
As Bangladesh evaluates its roster depth, Shakib remains the most statistically dominant player in the nation’s history. His career metrics highlight why the board remains interested in extending his international tenure.
| Format | Matches | Runs | Wickets |
|---|---|---|---|
| Test | 69 | 4,543 | 242 |
| ODI | 247 | 7,570 | 317 |
| T20I | 129 | 2,551 | 149 |
While Shakib previously expressed a desire to play his final Test match on home soil, the BCB’s current directive requires a wider commitment to white-ball formats. The board’s next steps involve assessing his match readiness and organizing a clear developmental path back into the starting XI.
