Ibrahim Zadran Appointed Afghanistan T20I Captain; Rashid Khan Removed Following World Cup Exit
NEW DELHI – The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) has appointed opener Ibrahim Zadran as the new captain of the national T20I team, effective immediately for the upcoming white-ball series against Sri Lanka. The leadership change comes in the wake of Afghanistan’s elimination in the league stage of the recent ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, prompting a strategic overhaul of the squad’s management.
Zadran takes over from star leg-spinner Rashid Khan, who led the team during their historic run to the semi-finals in the 2024 edition but oversaw the recent early exit. Zadran previously served as vice-captain and has captained the side in ODI formats during Rashid’s absences due to injury.
Rationale Behind the Leadership Change
Chief Selector Ahmad Shah Sulimankhil confirmed the transition was part of a broader long-term strategy aligned with the ACB’s vision for future ICC events. While acknowledging Rashid Khan’s past contributions, the board emphasized the need for a fresh direction.
“Rashid Khan’s tenure as the T20I captain brought immense success to the team, particularly highlighted by the team’s remarkable journey in the 2024 edition of the T20 World Cup, where we reached the semi-finals,” Sulimankhil stated in an official release.
“In alignment with the ACB’s long-term strategic vision and following recent changes in our Team Management, including the appointment of a new head coach, we have made the thoughtful decision to transition the leadership within the T20I setup. Ibrahim Zadran, who has served as Rashid Khan’s deputy, will assume the role as Afghanistan’s regular captain in this format.”
Squad Overhaul: Key Omissions and Additions
The announcement coincides with significant changes to the playing XI. Senior figures, including pacer Fazalhaq Farooqi and all-rounder Gulbadin Naib, have been omitted from the squad for the Sri Lanka series. The selection committee has introduced fresh talent to build bench strength for upcoming cycles.

“Our long-term goal is to adequately prepare the team for the upcoming two World Cup events,” Sulimankhil added. “We are hopeful that, under this new leadership, the National Team will not only flourish but also showcase outstanding performances and build a strong and competitive bench strength.”
Regional Security and Venue Monitoring
The Afghanistan Cricket Board also addressed logistical concerns regarding the series schedule amidst the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran. While the series remains on schedule, the board is coordinating with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and local authorities regarding venue safety.
“Although a final decision will be made in a couple of days, the ACB’s initial approach… is to proceed with the originally scheduled dates,” the board stated. “Should circumstances necessitate a change, the ACB will consider exploring alternative options for both the host country and the event schedule.”
Afghanistan continues to play the majority of its “home” series in the UAE and India due to security situations in Kabul.
