AB de Villiers Inspires Mumbai with Wheelchair Cricket and Community Service
In a heartwarming display of humility and community spirit, former South African cricket icon AB de Villiers spent a memorable day volunteering across Mumbai. Known for his explosive batting and innovative shot-making on the field, the cricketer showcased a different side of his personality by participating in wheelchair cricket and community service initiatives as part of Project Mumbai’s SATRANG program.
De Villiers, the Brand Champion for Project Mumbai—a non-profit dedicated to fostering civic pride through community participation—began his day at the historic Islam Gymkhana in Marine Lines. There, he joined the Mumbai Wheelchair Cricket Team for a practice session. Strapping himself into a wheelchair, the cricketing legend played alongside the athletes, sharing moments of laughter, mutual respect, and camaraderie. His participation not only highlighted the skill and determination of the wheelchair cricketers but also brought much-needed attention to the sport, which is gaining traction in India.
“Playing wheelchair cricket was an eye-opening experience. These athletes are incredible, and their passion for the game is infectious. I’m honored to have shared the field with them,” said de Villiers, whose genuine enthusiasm electrified the atmosphere.
Moving from the cricket ground to the classroom, de Villiers visited a BMC municipal school in Malabar Hill, where he rolled up his sleeves to help beautify classrooms. Armed with a paintbrush, he transformed dull walls into vibrant spaces, creating a brighter learning environment for young students. He also spent time at the CSSC Centre, engaging with underprivileged children during a paper bag-making workshop, spreading smiles and encouragement.
Reflecting on his day, de Villiers shared, “Mumbai has always welcomed me with open arms, especially during my IPL days. Today, I wanted to give back, not as a cricketer, but as a volunteer. There’s something truly powerful about working together to improve spaces for children, families, and this amazing city.”
Adding a dose of excitement for cricket fans, de Villiers also spoke about the upcoming IPL 2025 final, expressing his delight at Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) reaching the summit clash. “I’m thrilled that RCB has made it to the final. With Mumbai Indians securing a win recently, Qualifier 2 promises to be a cracker. I’m eagerly awaiting the final, and hopefully, this will be the year for RCB to lift the trophy,” he said optimistically.
RCB, who have yet to win an IPL title, are in their fourth final, having previously reached the decider in 2009, 2011, and 2016. They fell short against Deccan Chargers, Chennai Super Kings, and Sunrisers Hyderabad (by a narrow 8-run margin) respectively. The Bengaluru-based franchise will face the winner of Qualifier 2 between Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings in the grand finale scheduled for June 3, 2025, at a venue yet to be confirmed.
De Villiers’ day of service and his unwavering support for RCB have once again cemented his status as a beloved figure in the cricketing world. From inspiring differently-abled athletes to uplifting young minds, his actions off the field speak as loudly as his legendary 360-degree shots did on it. As Mumbai continues to buzz with his goodwill gestures, fans across the globe await to see if RCB can finally clinch that elusive IPL title under the watchful eyes of their former star.
