Emotional Moment: Rohit Sharma Overwhelmed as Parents Inaugurate Stand in His Honor at Wankhede

In a moment brimming with pride and emotion, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) unveiled the Rohit Sharma Stand at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Friday. This touching tribute to India’s ODI and T20I captain, and Mumbai Indians legend, marks a significant milestone in the illustrious career of one of cricket’s modern greats. The ceremony, attended by family, teammates, dignitaries, and fans, saw Rohit visibly moved as his parents inaugurated the stand in his honor.

The event was not just about Rohit; the MCA also paid homage to other stalwarts of Indian cricket by dedicating stands to Sharad Pawar and Ajit Wadekar at Grand Stands Levels 3 and 4 respectively, while the MCA Office Lounge was named in memory of former MCA President Amol Kale. These dedications reflect the association’s commitment to honoring those who have shaped the legacy of cricket in Mumbai and beyond.

Located at Divecha Pavilion Level 3, the Rohit Sharma Stand symbolizes the extraordinary journey of a local boy from Borivali who rose to become a global cricketing icon. With over 19,700 international runs, 49 centuries, and holding the world record for the highest individual ODI score of 264 runs, Rohit’s achievements are nothing short of phenomenal. Under his captaincy, India clinched the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 title and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy, while his leadership also guided Mumbai Indians to a record five IPL titles.

Speaking at the ceremony, an emotional Rohit shared his gratitude and anticipation for playing in front of the stand named after him. ‘It will be a surreal feeling on May 21 when I come here to play against Delhi Capitals representing Mumbai Indians. To have a stand in my name is a very special feeling, and it will be even more significant while representing my country,’ he said. His words resonated with humility as he acknowledged the sacrifices of his family, particularly his parents, wife, and brother, stating, ‘So many people, especially my mom and dad, have sacrificed so much for me to be standing here today.’

The entire Mumbai Indians squad rallied behind their former captain, adding to the warmth of the occasion. Rohit, with his trademark humor, lightened the mood by joking, ‘I know my team is waiting for my speech to end so they can start training.’ He also extended heartfelt thanks to MCA officials, the media, and special guests, including Sharad Pawar and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who graced the event. ‘This is a very special day in my life, one I will never forget,’ he concluded, his voice thick with emotion.

As the ceremony concluded, it was clear that this honor is not just a recognition of Rohit Sharma’s on-field exploits but a celebration of his deep-rooted connection with Mumbai cricket. From hitting sixes that mesmerize crowds to leading India to glory, Rohit has etched his name in history. Now, with the Rohit Sharma Stand at Wankhede, his legacy stands tall—literally and figuratively—at the very venue where he has scripted some of his most memorable performances.
