CSK Head Coach Stephen Fleming Targets Dewald Brevis Return Ahead of Delhi Capitals Clash

Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming remains optimistic about the return of top-order batter Dewald Brevis. The franchise has adopted a conservative recovery plan following a side strain that kept Brevis out of the first three matches of the IPL 2026 season. Fleming anticipates the 22-year-old will be available for their upcoming fixture against Delhi Capitals on April 11 at M.A. Chidambaram Stadium.

Injury Management and Recovery Timeline

“We hope he is going to be right for the next game,” Stephen Fleming told reporters. “We have five days between the next game. We have been conservative, and hopefully, these next five days will go as well as we have planned, and he is ready to go. It is a big loss, but we are looking forward to getting him back.”

Signs of progress surfaced ahead of Chennai’s recent match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Brevis participated in net sessions and faced throwdowns from assistant coach Rajiv Kumar. His return offers a solution to a batting order that has struggled to establish momentum during the opening phase of the tournament.

Statistical Impact of Brevis in the Lineup

Chennai felt the absence of the South African batter during their three consecutive opening defeats. After joining the franchise as a replacement player in 2025, Brevis emerged as an aggressive middle-order asset. The franchise retained him for the 2026 season based on his high strike rate and boundary production.

Death Over Struggles Against RCB

Fleming identified poor execution in the final overs as the primary reason for Chennai’s recent loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru. RCB scored 250 for 3, heavily aided by Tim David, who accelerated scoring with an unbeaten 70 from 25 balls. Devdutt Padikkal and captain Rajat Patidar also provided substantial contributions.

“The real turning point was Tim David in the back end, the acceleration he did through the last five overs,” Fleming explained. “We created some chances early on. We unfortunately just could not get a couple more wickets for our efforts, and then we hung in, and then unfortunately just lost our shape in the back end.”

  • RCB Total: 250/3 (Tim David 70*)
  • CSK Total: 207 all out
  • CSK Top Contributors: Sarfaraz Khan, Prashant Veer, Jamie Overton

Fleming noted that the bowling breakdown directly affected the batting approach. Chasing 251, Chennai batters faced immense scoreboard pressure. Despite resistance from Sarfaraz Khan, alongside Prashant Veer and Jamie Overton, the team collapsed for 207.

With a five-day preparation window, Chennai will focus on adjusting their death bowling tactics and integrating Brevis back into the starting lineup for the Delhi Capitals matchup.
